Description
The age of streamlined steam produced some striking examples- some less successful than others, as the New York Central's "upside down bathtub" shrouding on some Hudsons. The New York, New Haven & Hartford had only one class of styled steamers, but what a class they were. The I-5 was sleek, black, and highlighted by an aluminum band which rose from the pilot beam and swept back along the running board. The wheels were not hidden by skirting, and the nose was a cone with the centered headlight. The New Haven's I class were Pacifics, but when these 4-6-4's were delivered, they were assigned fifth place. They handled the crack trains between Boston and New Haven, where the electrified line continued to New York. Since Amtrak, the electrification was extended all the way to South Station.
